MSN Virus - Please Read!

Hi All,

As quite a few of you are probably already aware there is a nasty virus circulating on MSN. This virus sends out one of the following messages with a file named image.zip (image is generally followed by a number eg. image08.zip)

Wow i think i found your pic on myspace!
hah I think I found an old pic of us!
haha lets hope your parents dont see this picture of you
hey did i ever show you this picture of me?
is it ok if I add this pic to my new slideshow?
can i up some of these pics of ya to my myspace profile?

If you accept the file by accident you are still safe as long as you dont unzip the file and run the file inside. If you do recieve the file please delete it immediately.

If you are unfortunate enough to have already opened and run the file then instructions of how to remove it can be found on the following website:

Once the virus is active on your PC a bot will then procede to send out the file with a message to all of your MSN contacts.

Please note that the strain of the virus has changed several times and some of the instructions may not work depending on which form of the virus you have. If you manage to locate the image file on your PC and delete it but you are unable to locate the other files mentioned on this website then doing a system restore to one of the days before you got the virus could possibly work. Also the website I provided has a forum and the people on there will help you get rid of it if you are having problems.

Well I got this too but when I went to open it my Zone Alarm told me that it was ‘trying to gain remote access to my computer’ so I denied it. Then I went to my received files in my documents and deleted the file, which had been downloaded to there. I hope if anyone looks in My Received Files and sees that the file is still there they can then do the same. Just thought I would post this so that those of you who are not sure where the file would be can find it, to remove it.

sadly this happened to me too and in the end it locked me out of my computer even a system restore wouldnt work, so i had to have ti fixed by a laptop doctor ( very nice man) other than that sorry i know no more

Thanks, i accepted the file thinking that it was some pictures, and then when i unzip it, it’s a MS-DOS application, thank god i didn’t run that, i was so worried stiff!!!! =/

JWalker - If you follow the link i have mentioned above it explains how to get rid of the registry entry that runs the bot to send these messages. If you are unsure how to remove registry files then you can try doing a system restore to a date before you got the virus.

Kyle - As long as you didnt run the MSDOS file then you should be fine. Make sure you locate the files you accepted and unzipped and delete them.

and the message kept repeating so I clicked to download the file and I tried to open the file, not knowing what it could be.Thankfully, my computer recognised it as malicious and prevented the files from being unzipped, and I have deleted them.Thankyou for bringing this to my attention!I’ll warn my friends about it!
