It has been widely reported that Colin McRae, former world rally champion, has been killed in a helicopter accident.
Colin, 39, his son Johnny, 5, the youngster’s friend Ben Porcelli and family friend Graeme Duncan, were all named by police as being passengers in the helicopter which crashed on Saturday near the McRae family home.
Colin came from a family with great rally ties. His father Jimmy was five times British rally champion and his brother Alister is also a former British rally champion. In a motorsport career spanning 30 years, Colin achieved no fewer than 25 rally wins and was Britain’s first world rally champion – an achievement that earned him the MBE.

Despite his enormous success, Colin was always had time for his fans and was very down to earth. He leaves behind his wife Alison and daughter Hollie.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the McRae family at this tragic time.

This man is a legend. I have grown up watching him do things with a Rally car that have defied every law of physics and gravity. He was an all or nothing sort of guy and every time I watched him compete I knew I would be in for a surprise or two.
It is a huge loss for Scotland and a huge loss for the Rally community. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. He will be remembered forever with a smile.
A true legend in his own right, lost in such tragic circimstances
As a fellow Scot and a huge rally fan this is truly devastating news. Colin McRae was indeed the greatest rally driver to grace any rally stage, a true champion.
As rally radio marshalls, myself and Median have been privileged to see him compete on several occasions. People would come far and wide just to get a glimpse of a genius at work. I will never forget the roar from the crowd as he would drive by, no other drivers competing got the reception he did. Rallying wont be the same without him.
Last November he took the time to send my son a birthday card that was signed by himself, his brother Alistair and his father Jimmy. The reaction from my son when he opened it is something I will never forget, he was in tears bless him.
My sincerest condolences go to the McRae family and the families of Ben Porcelli and Graeme Duncan.
RIP Colin , Johnny, Ben and Graeme

This is such a shock, if he was to die you’d have thought it would be when rallying.
My eldest son loved him when he was growing up, a terrible shame and loss of life.
RIP Colin
